Flooding Update - 8 October, 2015
Flooding continues along the Edisto River, following the heavy rains that fell across the watershed between Friday, October 2 and Monday, October 5. As the high water flows downstream, areas closer to the coast are still experiencing rising water, even as flood levels recede in upstream areas.
In the midlands, the North and South Forks of the Edisto rose out of their banks over the weekend, causing numerous road and bridge closures, and impacting residences and other structures. Floodwaters are not expected to drop along the North and South Forks until some time next week.
On the Main Stem of the Edisto, levels were still rising on Thursday morning, and the National Weather Service is predicting that the flooding at Givhans Ferry will not crest (or reach peak level) until Sunday, October 11. Again, numerous roads and bridges are closed, and flooding has impacted residences and other structures in low-lying areas. There have been numerous flood advisories issued, and local authorities have advised some evacuations.
There has been significant damage to infrastructure and property throughout the Edisto watershed as a result of this flooding, but the full extent of damage has not been assessed. Many of the counties within the Edisto basin are covered by disaster declarations issued by State and Federal authorities.
This is an ongoing and evolving flood event, and as time passes the situation in local areas will be changing. Keep abreast of the situation where you are, and remain aware of river conditions as they change. Contact local and state authorities with for specific information.
For life-threatening emergencies, call 911.
