One important aspect of the work Friends of the Edisto is standing up for the river and a broad range of stakeholders, providing a voice and leadership on various issues.
Since 2012, we have been engaging with a series of water quality issues, particularly in the North Fork's headwaters.
In late 2013, when news broke of a new agricultural registration issued by DHEC on the South Fork (below Aiken State Park) to withdraw over 800 million gallons of water a month - regardless of the river's flow at any given time - FRED led an effort to challenge that action. A negotiated settlement was reached in that particular case. Friends of the Edisto remains engaged in the ongoing effort to fix flaws in the state's Surface Water Withdrawal Act, protect the Edisto for today's users and the future.
